    When Julie Sarasty and her family moved into their 64 Viscoloid Ave. apartment in January 2016, she blamed the runny noses they all got to the common cold.

    After several months passed and the sniffling continued, Sarasty blamed it on spring allergies.

    It wasn't until she started taking a closer look under her kitchen sink that she started to blame the mold.

    The merger of UMass Memorial - HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster and UMass Memorial - Clinton and a proposed emergency department expansion were both approved yesterday by the Massachusetts Public Health Council, the health care system announced Thursday.

    Under the merger, which is expected to be official Oct. 1, Clinton Hospital will become a branch operating under the HealthAlliance license. The emergency department groundbreaking will take place in early spring, according to a press release from UMass Memorial.

    No patient wants to wake up after surgery to find out the wrong shoulder was operated on, or that it was the other pinkie finger that ended up being amputated. 

    The staff at HealthAlliance Hospital doesn't want that either, which is why it started a campaign to crack down on any potential for wrong-sided procedures.

    The board of trustees for UMass Memorial Health Care voted Wednesday to approve the merger of UMass Memorial-Clinton Hospital with UMass Memorial-HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster.

    Staff members at UMass Memorial HealthAlliance Hospital are looking forward to better meeting the needs of local patients now that a new clinic devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer has been established. 

    "It's been fantastic. Patients have been waiting for us to come," said Dr. Mary Maloney, director of the hospital's new Mohs program for skin cancer treatment. 

    The clinic, which started seeing patients on July 5, employs the Mohs surgical technique, a highly accurate process of skin-cancer diagnosis.

    UMass Memorial - HealthAlliance Hospital has opened a new surgery clinic that will allow for treatment of common forms of skin cancer right in Leominster.

    The Mohs Micrographic Surgery Clinic opened last week and has already begun treating patients. The clinic offers Mohs surgery, a specialized treatment for removal of skin cancer, according to a release from HealthAlliance Hospital.

    Recently, UMass Memorial- HealthAlliance Hospital received a generous donation of $1,080 from IC Federal Credit Union through the “Change for Charity” Program. The funds will be distributed to the C.H.A.R.T. Behavioral Health Initiative Fund at UMass Memorial- HealthAlliance Hospital.

    The UMass Memorial - HealthAlliance Hospital, Leominster Campus, was named to the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Hospital Honor Roll, the only Central Massachusetts hospital to make the list. HealthAlliance was one of 55 hospitals in four states on the 2015 honor roll from Harvard Pilgrim, joining the ranks of Beth Israel Deaconess hospitals and Tufts Medical Center.
