“Above and Beyond” by Karen Salomon-Escoto

One of my patients switched insurance plans in July 2021 and incurred a $2000+ specialty medication charge from Express Scripts, which he paid from his funeral fund. He was not eligible for UMMSP services anymore, yet our specialty pharmacy team remained in close contact with the patient, particularly Tiffany Pacher, CPhT. Tiffany offered support above and beyond the call of duty throughout this situation.
Thanks to her diligent investigation, Tiffany discovered that the previous pharmacy overcharged the patient’s medication co-pay card, leaving insufficient funds for the 7/2021 supply, billed by the new insurance plan’s pharmacy. Tiffany then had the previous outside pharmacy rectify the charge, which should’ve been $25, not $2000+, and the patient was reimbursed.
Tiffany’s tireless efforts went a long way, relieving my patient’s emotional and financial stress. The pharmacy liaisons’ expertise and dedication to patients, regardless of their affiliation to our pharmacy, truly exemplifies our UMass Memorial Specialty Pharmacy mission.
This is the level of professionalism and advocacy that makes us the best place to get care. I am humbled and honored to be part of the specialty pharmacy family of champions!
