UMass Memorial Medical Center President Patrick Muldoon to Retire
WORCESTER, Mass. – UMass Memorial Health Care President and CEO Eric Dickson, MD, announced today that the president of the academic medical center, Patrick Muldoon, FACHE, will retire from his position on January 31, 2018. Dickson praised Muldoon for his hard work and commitment to the organization, which began as president of UMass Memorial – HealthAlliance Hospital, now UMass Memorial HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital, nearly 15 years ago. The January date coincides with the planned timeframe Muldoon had set for retirement when he accepted the position.
“Being the president of an academic medical center and safety net hospital comes with its own unique set of challenges,” Dickson said. “As a leader, Patrick has risen time and again to meet those challenges head-on and always with the patient at the center. He has set an outstanding example for me and all those who have worked with him closely. I know that his leadership, wisdom, patience, warmth, and legacy will continue to positively shape our organization for many years to come. I wish him and his wife Eileen all the best. They will forever be a part of the UMass Memorial family.”
"Patrick Muldoon has set the standard for all of us in his passion for the well-being of our patients and our staff at UMass Memorial Medical Center and HealthAlliance Hospital,” said Rick Siegrist, chairman of the UMass Memorial Health Care Board. “I know we will uniformly miss his selfless dedication to others and his infectious optimism in challenging times."
Muldoon became president of UMass Memorial Medical Center on August 26, 2013, after an exhaustive nationwide search. He is a past board chair of the Massachusetts Hospital Association and has received numerous awards during his 40-year career.
Jeff Smith, MD, JD, MBA, executive vice president and chief operating officer of UMass Memorial Medical Center since 2015, will serve as interim president while a nationwide search is conducted.
