UMass Memorial Medical Center Awarded Child Passenger Safety Grant
- Grant Will Make Car Seats Available to Residents in Need
- Free Car Seat Checks Held Twice per Month
WORCESTER, Mass. – UMass Memorial Medical Center has recently been awarded a Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Equipment Grant that will be used to purchase car and booster seats for distribution to local families in need. The Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, Office of Grants and Research - Highway Safety Division awarded grants totaling nearly $170,000 to 65 local police and fire departments, regional non-profit agencies, and hospitals. As one of the 225 car seat inspection sites in Massachusetts, UMass Memorial Medical Center will continue its program in the Worcester community with certified technicians ensuring children’s seats are installed correctly.
“This grant helps us to serve more families who find it difficult to afford car and booster seats to protect their children,” said Michael P. Hirsh, MD, FACS, FAAP, Surgeon-in-Chief, UMASS Memorial Children's Medical Center Medical Director, Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Worcester. “Children are our most precious cargo and we have to protect them when they cannot protect themselves. To that end, we hold Car Seat Check events to help with the proper installation of children’s seats.”
Car Seat checks held in 2017 served 367 families; 171 of whom received car seats and 196 had seat inspections alone.
Car Seat Check Events are held every other Thursday morning by appointment only. To schedule an appointment for a car seat check by a certified technician, please call 774-443-8626 or email email@example.com.
Nationwide, traffic crashes are a leading cause of death for children of all ages. Properly installed car and booster seats have been proven to reduce the risk of death and injury in crashes, yet the American Automobile Association (AAA) estimates that 75% of car seats are installed incorrectly.
