On November 2, 2023, Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, presented "Mindfulness at UMass, and its Impact in the World: 44 Years and Counting" as part of the Department of Medicine Grand Rounds at UMass Chan Medical School. Sponsored by The Center for Mindfulness at UMass Memorial Health, the event celebrated Kabat-Zinn's pioneering contributions to healthcare and wellness. He discussed the global impact of mindfulness, supported by scientific evidence, and its integration into society. The presentation emphasized mindfulness in medicine, its incorporation into mainstream medical approaches, and its cost-effectiveness compared to pharmaceutical interventions. Jon’s insights provide practical tools for navigating modern life and embracing the transformative influence of mindfulness on health and healing.
Join Certified MBSR instructor Colleen Camenisch for this one hour presentation. What is mindfulness? Why practice? Learn about its health benefits, its history at UMass Medical Center, and ways that you can bring mindfulness into your own daily life for greater balance, resilience, and ease.
Ginny Wholley, Certified MBSR instructor, leads us on a brief body scan and invites us to bring kind attention to our experience. Noticing changes and anchoring on the awareness of breathing, Ginny then guides us in a practice of letting go of the boundaries that normally define us and being present to what is here now.
In this 30 minute sitting meditation, certified MBSR instructor, Eva Tsuda, guides us through anchors of attention, noticing body sensations, and practicing patience and loving-kindness. As the mind wanders, we are reminded that we can always return to our anchor.
