Life Flight is based at the Duddie Massad Emergency and Trauma Center on the Medical Center’s University Campus in Worcester, overlooking Lake Quinsigamond.

Life Flight’s specially trained team of medical professionals includes skilled flight nurses and critical care paramedics. Our staff provides the highest-quality care in the highest-pressure situations—every day. Since 1982 we’ve helped more than 30,000 patients in a geographic area that stretches from New Hampshire to Connecticut and from Boston to Albany, NY.

About the Helicopter

Life Flight is specifically designed for emergency response and features lifesaving equipment and devices such as:

  • Defibrillators to treat heart rhythm problems
  • Mechanical ventilators to help with breathing
  • Heart monitors
  • Oxygen for breathing difficulties
  • Intravenous pumps to deliver medicines and fluids

The helicopter itself is a leading model in medical air transport that has:

  • A top speed of 140 miles per hour
  • A range of more than 350 miles
  • An enclosed tail rotor that makes the aircraft 50 percent quieter
  • A compact design for fuel efficiency
  • Advanced night-vision and GPS technology

Our pilots are among the most experienced and skilled in the industry. They are trained and managed by Air Methods Corporation, the nation’s leader in air medical transport of Englewood, CO. 

Life Flight is recognized by the Board of the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) for the excellence of its programs in safety, quality management and employee education.

Life Flight is a founding member of the North East Air Alliance (NEAA), a group of regional air medical services professionals who collaborate on best practices in safety and critical care transport medicine.

Each year, UMass Memorial Life Flight hosts an educational symposium to help emergency medical professionals enhance their pre-hospital care.
