STOW, Mass. — Masters Academy International (MAI) and UMass Memorial Health (UMMH) today announced a strategic partnership that will provide MAI student-athletes with comprehensive sports medicine services through one of New England’s leading academic health systems.

The partnership brings together physicians from UMass Memorial Health's Division of Sports and Exercise Medicine with MAI's coaches, athletic trainers and performance staff to develop the systems, protocols and individualized care strategies that support student-athlete health, wellbeing and performance. The partnership also provides streamlined access to UMass Memorial Health’s extensive network of orthopedic and sports medicine specialists. Key elements of the collaboration include:

  • On-campus physician evaluations, consultation and educational programming;
  • Development and oversight of medical policies and treatment protocols for sports-related injuries, creating a seamless framework among physicians, athletic trainers and strength and conditioning staff;
  • Analysis of sports science and performance data designed to reduce injury risk and support long-term athlete development;
  • Nutritional programming and education to promote health, recovery, and athletic performance.

“This partnership reflects our belief that elite athletic development requires exceptional healthcare”, said Peter Masters, Co-Founder of Masters Academy International. “By partnering with UMass Memorial Health, we’re ensuring our student-athletes are supported by experienced physicians who will play an active role in their health, wellbeing and recovery.”

Opening in Stow, Massachusetts, Masters Academy International will welcome approximately 300 students for its inaugural class this September and will be New England’s first and only school combining high-performance sports and top tier academics.

“With the resources of Central Massachusetts’ only academic medical center and a nationally recognized sports medicine program, UMass Memorial Health is uniquely positioned to support student-athletes with a comprehensive approach to sports medicine and performance,” said Dr. Eric Dickson, President and CEO of UMass Memorial Health. “We are proud to partner with Masters Academy International and bring together the clinical expertise, resources and community presence needed to help young athletes thrive both on and off the field.”

“The strongest athlete development programs integrate expert medical care, performance training, injury prevention, and recovery,” said Dr. Lee Mancini, Chief of the Division of Sports and Exercise Medicine at UMass Memorial Health. “We are excited to partner with Masters Academy International to provide student-athletes with comprehensive, athlete-centered care. Our sports medicine team offers innovative diagnostic and treatment solutions, backed by world-class orthopedic surgeons and rehabilitation specialists, to help athletes recover effectively, optimize performance, and achieve long-term success.”

UMass Memorial Health's sports medicine program serves athletes at every level, providing care to 25 area high schools, eight colleges and universities, the Worcester Red Sox and other professional sports teams. The program also supports major sporting events including the Boston Marathon, Falmouth Road Race and Bay State Games, while providing sports medicine leadership and emergency action planning throughout Central Massachusetts.
