Patients seeking colorectal care at UMass Memorial Health have access to nationally recognized specialists who are helping advance the field of colon and rectal surgery.

Justin Maykel, MD, Chief of the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery and Medical Director of Perioperative Services at UMass Memorial Medical Center, has been elected to the Executive Council of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), one of the nation's leading professional organizations for colorectal surgeons.

At the same time, Karim Alavi, MD, is being recognized for completing three years of service on the ASCRS Executive Council. Together, these achievements highlight the expertise, leadership and commitment to excellence found within UMass Memorial's colorectal surgery team.

For patients, this national recognition reflects something important: access to surgeons who are helping shape advances in colorectal care while providing expert treatment close to home. The UMass Memorial team cares for patients with a wide range of colorectal conditions, combining leading-edge techniques, clinical expertise and compassionate care.

ASCRS leadership positions are awarded to surgeons who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to patient care, education, research and the advancement of the specialty. Having UMass Memorial physicians serve in these roles reinforces the organization's commitment to delivering high-quality colorectal care to patients throughout Central Massachusetts and beyond.
