UMass Memorial Health Scales KATE AI Platform Emergency Departments Systemwide to Enhance Patient Safety and Nurse Decision Support
Worcester, MA- UMass Memorial Health (UMMH), the largest not-for-profit health care system in Central Massachusetts, is proud to announce the expansion of KATE AI across an additional five hospital emergency departments, for what is now a total of seven, to enhance patient safety, optimize efficiency and support frontline nurses. This expansion follows the successful pilot program launched in February 2023 at UMass Memorial Medical Center’s University and Memorial campuses.
KATE AI, a nurse-first artificial intelligence platform, seamlessly integrates with the system’s existing electronic health record (EHR) platform, Epic, to provide real-time clinical decision support to nurses assessing patient acuity and providing accurate early sepsis detection at triage.
“We are thrilled that KATE AI will now be utilized across the UMass Memorial Health system,” says Ken Shanahan MSN, RN, senior director of emergency medicine and behavioral health at UMass Memorial Medical Center. "Beyond traditional clinical decision support, we now have an analytic platform that provides our nurses and staff with real-time insights into clinical decision-making. This tool has been especially valuable as we continue to experience high admission rates in our emergency department. We’ve seen Kate AI streamline workflows for our caregivers.”
This expansion brings the innovative KATE AI platform to emergency departments at HealthAlliance – Clinton Hospital Clinton Campus, HealthAlliance - Clinton Hospital Leominster Campus, Harrington Hospital Southbridge Campus, Harrington Hospital Webster Campus and Marlborough Hospital.
Additional key benefits of KATE AI include:
- Improved Capacity Management: KATE optimizes ED throughput and reduces left without being seen (LWBS) rates by ensuring critically ill patients receive timely, appropriate care while efficiently managing lower-acuity cases.
- Early Sepsis Detection: Nurse-led sepsis AI algorithms analyze patient data—impressively before lab results—to identify potential sepsis cases earlier, enabling faster intervention and treatment.
- Enhanced Nurse Satisfaction: By providing nurses with greater confidence in their decision-making and reducing alert fatigue, KATE fosters a more supportive, collaborative, and efficient work environment.
“We are proud to work alongside UMass Memorial Health in their mission to deliver outstanding patient care,” said Steven Reilly, Chief Executive Officer of Mednition. “The expansion of KATE across their entire health system is a significant milestone in our shared journey to transform healthcare delivery. This move allows KATE to support nurses with real-time, AI-driven insights in the challenging emergency department environment—empowering them to provide the highest quality care to the communities they serve.”
