Choking in an Infant: What to Do

Here are images that show the steps for helping a baby who is choking.

Step-by-Step

  1. Baby with mouth open, choking.

    Look for signs of choking.

  2. Phone with 911 on screen.

    Call 911 if your baby can’t breathe or make sounds.

    Put your baby face-down on your forearm.

    Give back slaps between the shoulder blades.

    Use the heel of your hand to give 5 back slaps.
