Who Needs Diagnostic Audiology Tests?

At UMass Memorial Health, we provide testing for referred patients who come to us from:

• Our health care system, including hospitalized patients
• Our ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialists
• Outside health care systems and providers

Diagnostic Audiology Tests We Offer

In addition to comprehensive hearing tests, we offer: 

• Auditory brainstem response (ABR) test: This evoked potentials study assesses how your brain and auditory (hearing) nerve respond to sounds.
• Auditory steady-state response (ASSR) test: This auditory evoked potentials study measures your brain’s response to sound waves.
• Electrocochleography (ECoG) test: This test for Ménière’s disease (a balance disorder) measures electrical activity in the inner ear.
• Electronystagmography and videonystagmography (ENG-VNG) test: An ENG-VNG test evaluates eye movements that can contribute to inner ear disorders, including vestibular balance disorders, vertigo and tinnitus.
• Newborn hearing test: We are a Level 1 Massachusetts Department of Public Health newborn hearing test site for infants who don’t pass initial hearing tests.
• Sedated hearing test: We perform sedated ABR testing and other tests for infants and others who can’t participate in tests while awake.
• Vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) test: This test diagnoses balance disorders.
