A $250M gap in the safety net: Central Mass. hospitals fight for their financial lives as state's Health Safety Net reaches historic deficit

When an under or uninsured Massachusetts resident requires certain medical treatments, such as many in radiology, psychiatry, or rehabilitation, the cost of their care often falls to the state’s Health Safety Net. The fund serves to reimburse community health centers and acute care hospitals for specific essential services for those under and uninsured, including for those whose services aren’t covered by Medicaid.

Carrot Oat Bran Muffin Ingredients

  • 1 c. gluten-free oat bran
  • 1 c. powdered non-fat milk
  • 1 t baking powder
  • 1 t baking soda
  • 1 t cinnamon
  • 2 T artificial sweetener brown sugar blend
  • 3 large eggs, beaten (alternative: egg whites or egg substitute)
  • 1/2 c. applesauce, no sugar added
  • 1 c. grated carrots (about 2 large or 3 small)
  • 1/4 c. raisins
