Spearheaded by Dr. Lee Mancini, the head of sports medicine at UMass Memorial Health in Worcester, doctors from the sports medicine department along with trainers from local colleges and high school's met at the Buffone Rink in Worcester to practice scenarios where a hockey player has a spinal injury or laceration and every second counts. 

There's no doubt the number of COVID-19 infections are on the rise this summer. If it’s not an official surge, it’s a steep upward curve, and the numbers prove it. 

Massachusetts experienced a 33% spike in confirmed and probable COVID cases in the past month, according to the state Department of Public Health. Cases jumped from 1,901 in early July to 2,929 in early August.

UMass Memorial Health is expanding its acute care footprint with the $125-million renovation of the former Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center into a state-of-the-art facility with 72 beds, which will bring the total number of beds close to 900.
