What Is Complex Family Planning?

Complex family planning focuses on preventing pregnancy (with contraception) in people with challenging medical conditions or specialized needs. Services are also available for people with pregnancies that are unintended, complicated by congenital disorders or maternal health conditions, or are not likely to result in a live birth.

Our Complex Family Planning Services

Our complex family planning services include:

Contraception

• Education and assessments
• Pregnancy prevention for adolescents, gender-diverse people and patients with chronic, complex medical conditions
• Simple and complex placement and removal of intrauterine devices (IUDs) and contraceptive implants
• Emergency contraception (morning-after pill and IUDs)
• Permanent contraception (sterilization) regardless of age, marital status or obstetric history

Pregnancy Loss (Miscarriage or Stillbirth) and Termination (Abortion)

• Treatment of pregnancy loss due to miscarriage and stillbirth
• Medications that end a pregnancy (medical abortion) and induce labor
• Procedural abortion (through 25 weeks of gestation)

Legal Abortion Care

Abortion is legal in Massachusetts and available at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. We comply with all state laws and provide access to anyone in need, including people from out of state.

Insurance Coverage and Financial Support for Complex Family Planning

Insurance covers many complex family planning services, including birth control, abortion and pregnancy loss. Some plans cover these services at no cost to you.  

Our financial counselors can assist you if you do not have insurance or cannot afford your out-of-pocket expenses. We review your eligibility for MassHealth (our state’s Medicaid program) and connect you with additional resources if necessary.
