Cardiology Team Provides Expert Support After 'Widow-Maker' Heart Attack
Peter M. never expected to have a heart attack. In February 2022, he woke in the middle of the night “feeling funny” and then collapsed from what is often called a “widow-maker” heart attack. His wife, Corlis, immediately began CPR. Emergency responders revived him before bringing him to UMass Memorial Medical Center, where he underwent a stent procedure. During his recovery, tests showed that he also needed a pacemaker and defibrillator.
Corlis remembers how the care team supported them through an overwhelming time. “Peter was in the hospital for weeks. The cardiology team was so caring to us both,” she said. “I was part of the team. Everyone was on their game. UMass Memorial is the best-kept secret.” She was grateful that the nurses and doctors kept her informed, answered her questions and helped her understand Peter’s condition without making her feel hopeless.
Today, Peter is back to golfing and working on projects around their home. He also continues cardiac rehabilitation three times a week. “I love the care that the Medical Center gave me,” Peter said. “I’m grateful for the teaching hospital close by, and I recommend going to the Medical Center in Worcester. You don’t have to go to Boston.” He and Corlis remain deeply grateful to the emergency responders, rehabilitation teams and everyone at UMass Memorial who helped him return to the activities he enjoys.
