Understanding Thyroid and Parathyroid Disease

The thyroid is a tiny gland in your neck that makes and releases a hormone that controls metabolism (how your body uses energy). Thyroid problems can lead to too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism) or too little thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism). These conditions affect everything from your weight to your heart rate.

Parathyroid disease affects the four glands behind your thyroid. These glands make a hormone that regulates how much calcium is in your blood and bones. Parathyroid hormone imbalances cause too much calcium to build up in your blood and may lead to osteoporosis and other problems.

Our Approach to Thyroid Disease Care

Our endocrinologists and other providers personalize treatments to help you manage your thyroid condition and enjoy a better quality of life. 

• Diagnosis: We diagnose thyroid and parathyroid disease using thyroid function blood tests and imaging exams such as ultrasounds. We may take a sample of tissue from your glands (fine needle aspiration biopsy) to check for cancer.
• Genetic testing: The thyroid genomic classifier test looks for genetic changes in your thyroid nodule to help your doctor determine if your nodule is noncancerous or cancerous.
• Medication: Medication can regulate the amount of hormone your thyroid produces. Other drugs can help manage symptoms, such as a fast heart rate.
• Surgery: In some cases, we do surgery to remove part or all of your thyroid or parathyroid glands.
