Andrew Karson, MD, MPH, is Chief Physician Executive at UMass Memorial Health and President of UMass Memorial Medical Group, (which consists of 3,600 employees, including 2,200 physicians and advanced practice providers). Dr. Karson supports the 18 UMass Memorial Health Clinical Department Chairs in the recruitment, development and engagement of their faculty, guides the Medical Group’s compensation model and leads other strategic projects.
Prior to serving as President of the Medical Group, Dr. Karson was Chief Medical Officer and a Senior Vice President at UMass Memorial Medical Center, providing leadership over the Medical Center’s quality and patient safety programs, provider credentialing, ethics, graduate medical education and other programs. Before joining UMass Memorial Health, he served as Partners Healthcare Associate Chief Health Information Officer and Massachusetts General Hospital’s Associate Chief Medical Officer. His academic career has centered on medical education and leveraging health information technology to improve quality, patient safety and hospital operations. Dr. Karson practices as an internal medicine hospitalist in the Medical Group.
