President, UMass Memorial Medical Center
Justin Precourt is the President of UMass Memorial Medical Center (UMMMC). UMMMC is an 800-bed tertiary referral teaching hospital that employs 8,500 caregivers across three campuses and multiple community sites in central Massachusetts. The flagship member of UMass Memorial Health, UMMMC is a $2 billion nonprofit hospital that provides lifesaving care to over 1.5 million people throughout central New England.
Prior to his current appointment, Justin served as the Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Vice President for Patient Care Services at UMass Memorial Medical Center and Chief Nursing Executive at UMass Memorial Health (UMMH).
Under Justin’s leadership, UMMMC opened its newest inpatient facility – The North Pavilion on UMMMC’s University campus. This 72-bed facility provides much needed capacity relief to Central Massachusetts and features state-of-the-art technology for the comfort and care of patients and families.
Justin has leveraged an ambitious patient care services strategic plan to drive impressive performances in patient experience as well as patient safety and quality. Specifically, UMMMC’S “Likelihood to Recommend” HCAHP metric grew from bottom quartile in 2014 to the top 25 percent in 2022, despite national declines in scores in 2020-22. Simultaneously, the hospital’s “Journey to Zero Harm” focused on transparency and improvement around key hospital-acquired patient complications. Last year, UMass Memorial Medical Center was named a 4-star institution by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for the first time in the organization’s history, underlining the significant quality and safety achievements over the last year.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Justin served as the organization’s incident commander in COVID-19 response throughout multiple waves of the virus. Justin’s vast experience as a nurse leader enabled him to utilize innovative solutions to address capacity in the Medical Center, including a Hospital at Home program that has treated thousands of patients and an ambitious Emergency Department redesign that has led to increased access and flow to the patients of Central Massachusetts.
Prior to joining UMass Memorial Medical Center, Justin served as Interim Chief Nursing Officer at Tufts Medical Center providing clinical, operational, and business leadership to Patient Care Services and Nursing. In addition to leadership roles, Justin began his career at the bedside working as a Registered Nurse for eight years.
Justin received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Northeastern University in 1999. He received his Master of Science in Nursing from Saint Joseph’s College in Standish, Maine and completed his Doctor of Nursing Practice at Rush University.
