UMass Memorial's new roof garden swaps the buzz of medical equipment for the buzz of bees
It's been three weeks since the ribbon was cut officially unveiling a rooftop garden at the North Pavilion at UMass Memorial Medical Center and it's already become a regular lunch spot for Katherine Poirier, a patient care assistant, and Elaine Lam and Selaijha Powers, both unit secretaries.
The rooftop garden ties in with the theme we were trying to accomplish with the North Pavilion — creating an environment that promotes healing and wellness.

‘We want this to be able to continue’: Successful home hospital programs could be victims of D.C. gridlock
Paula Ward’s phone rang at 2:08 a.m., waking her up on the couch in her apartment in South Boston. It was her nurse. Ward’s oxygen levels had dropped, the nurse said, explaining the early morning call. She asked Ward to clamp a small device to the end of her finger to check her oxygen saturation, or percentage of oxygen in her blood.
