Community Health and Engagement Spotlight

Since it was established in 2022, the Food Is Medicine program has provided hundreds of residents with nutritious food and equitable access to resources. The program includes two interventions: Fresh Connect and Growing Places’ RX Food FARMacy.

Fresh Connect provides prepaid debit cards to purchase healthy foods at many local grocery stores in the Worcester area. This program is offered at UMass Memorial Health Medical Center – Cancer Center and UMass Memorial Medical Center – Children’s Medical Center.

Growing Places’ RX Food FARMacy has been offered to patients at UMass Memorial Health – HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital, UMass Memorial Health – Simonds-Sinon Regional Cancer Center and UMass Memorial Health – Fitchburg Family Practice. Patients who identify as food insecure or with other economic insecurities are provided information and enrolled into RX Food FARMacy. This program provides patients access to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) enrollment, Healthy Incentives education and access to fresh produce either through local mobile food markets or home delivery.
