Job Scam Alert

In today's connected society, online scams are increasingly common. Job seekers can be a target and should be aware of possible recruitment scams.

UMass Memorial Health has recently become aware of scammers impersonating UMass Memorial recruiters and other team members to offer fraudulent interviews and jobs. Here’s what to look out for.

Known Recruiting Scams

At this time, we are aware of the following fraudulent outreach from impersonators claiming to work for UMass Memorial:

• Email: hiring@ummhealth.org 
• Website: careersummhealth.org
• Phone calls from scammers posing as UMass Memorial recruiters

How to Recognize a Recruiting Scam

Here are a few warning signs of a potential recruiting scam: 

• You haven't applied for a job with UMass Memorial but receive an invitation to interview with a member of the recruitment team by email or over the phone. 
• You haven't applied for a job with UMass Memorial but receive an offer of employment by email or over the phone. 
• You are asked for personal information by phone or email (such as your full name, address and/or Social Security Number).
• You are asked for banking information by phone or email.

Legitimate UMass Memorial Health Process for Job Applicants

• Applicants must apply to jobs online via our Careers website for consideration.
• Applicants must interview with a UMass Memorial representative prior to the extension of any job offer. Members of the recruiting team will always communicate with applicants from an @umassmemorial.org email address to schedule telephone or video calls, and when extending job offers.
• Applicants can check on the status of all applications submitted to UMass Memorial through the applicant portal, and legitimate emails through this portal would come from ummh@myworkday.com.

What to Do If You Receive a Suspicious Message

• Be cautious of unexpected recruiting communications claiming to be from UMass Memorial. 
• Do not respond, click links, or provide personal or financial information requested by email, online or over the phone. 
• Please report this suspicious outreach to talentacquisition@umassmemorial.org.

If You’ve Provided Sensitive Information or Think You’ve Been Scammed

Take action based on the information shared. Different types of information require different responses. Review the below guidance and recommended next steps:

• Name, phone number or email address: Be alert for follow-up phishing messages, suspicious calls and requests for verification codes.
• Home address or date of birth: Watch for targeted scams and attempts to misuse your personal information.
• Social Security number or government identification: Visit IdentityTheft.gov for guidance on identity theft prevention and recovery.
• Bank account or payment card information: Contact your bank or card issuer using its official telephone number to report the exposure and discuss protective measures. 
• Passwords or account verification codes: Change affected passwords immediately. Contact the relevant service provider if you suspect unauthorized access.
• For any and all above information shared: You may report the crime through the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Internet Crime Complaint Center's website.
