Our Volunteer Programs at the Medical Center
Student School Year Program
For students who can commit to volunteering during the school year, this program requires a minimum commitment of one 4-hour shift per week throughout the school year. This program remains open and accepting new volunteers.
Student Summer Program
This program is primarily for students who will be returning to school in the fall and want to complete volunteer hours during the summer. The program requires to complete 80 hours of volunteering over the summer, typically completed with two 2-hour shifts per week.
Note: The deadline for the Student Summer Program was May 31. Check back for the summer program in 2026.
Year-Round Volunteer Program
For individuals no longer in school who can commit to volunteering year-round, we offer a program requiring a weekly commitment of one 4-hour hour shift for a minimum of 1 year. This option is ideal for those looking to contribute regularly over a full year.
Our Volunteer Programs at Harrington
Cancer Center
Work directly with patients in the Infusion area or help with filing in the department.
Companion Care Volunteer: A Heartfelt Role
Bring comfort and reassurance to patients in need. Whether it’s sitting quietly by their side, holding their hand, or engaging in gentle conversation, companionship can make a world of difference to someone’s hospital experience.
Dietary Department
Help to maintain the cafeteria area and support the dietary staff.
Fundraising
In collaboration with the Auxiliary, work on Hospital and Community-based projects throughout the year.
Gift Shop
Greet customers and provide superior customer service. This opportunity can include utilizing a cash drawer, straightening shelves, and wrapping purchases. There are additional opportunities available, including placing orders of merchandise and setting up displays.
Materials Management
Help with stocking shelves and delivering supplies throughout the Hospital.
Music
Provide live music as a service in public areas of the Hospital, or at the bedside to create a friendly, pleasant, and relaxing environment.
Office Assistance
Help with mailings, data entry, filing and various other projects. There are opportunities in many departments. The responsibilities of each placement vary, depending on the department’s needs and requests.
Pastoral Outreach
Provide spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and staff. Qualified staff may administer Communion or Sacrament of the sick as requested.
Sewers / Crafters
Volunteers sew or crochet in their homes or in groups on alternate Thursday mornings at the Harrington Southbridge Campus. They make various items, including baby layettes, stuffed animals, pillowcases. The Hospital supplies the fabric, thread, yarn, and other materials needed.
Transport Services
Assist Transportation staff in moving patients to all areas of the Hospital. Deliver specimens to laboratory areas and assist with the delivery of patient care equipment and surgical supplies to nursing care units.
Welcome Patient Program
Assist staff in welcoming incoming patients on the Medical Surgical Units, visit with and talk to patients and their families. More detailed description of responsibilities will be spelled out in an in-person conversation.

Emergency Department Volunteer Greeter Program
The Emergency Department Volunteer Greeter program welcomes patients and visitors, providing a friendly and calming first point of contact. Volunteers assist with directions, answer basic questions, and help ease stress during emergency visits. This program enhances the overall patient experience by offering warmth and support in a fast-paced environment.
Hospice Volunteer program
The Hospice Volunteer program provides compassionate support to patients and their families during end-of-life care. Volunteers offer companionship, respite for caregivers, and assist with various non-medical tasks to improve quality of life. This program helps create a comforting and supportive environment tailored to individual needs.
Pastoral Care Volunteer Program
The Pastoral Care Volunteer program offers spiritual and emotional support to individuals facing illness, crisis, or end-of-life challenges. Volunteers provide compassionate listening, prayer, and encouragement, respecting each person’s beliefs and values. This program fosters hope and comfort through presence and meaningful connection.
The Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC)
The PFAC is comprised of patients and family members who partner with UMass Memorial leaders to evaluate and enhance the quality, safety, and overall experience for patients, families, and visitors.
