Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) at UMass Memorial Health provides high-level outpatient mental health services in a structured weekday program. Partial hospitalization can be an alternative to inpatient care for people who need extra support but don’t need 24/7 care. You see a team of mental health specialists and receive similar services provided to hospitalized patients. At the end of the day, you go home.

Who Needs Partial Hospitalization?

You may benefit from partial hospitalization if you:

• Have completed an inpatient psychiatric stay and need continued support
• Have a mental health condition that requires more intense care than you can get at a therapist’s office but don’t need or want inpatient care 

About Our Partial Hospitalization Program

Most people participate in our Partial Hospitalization Program for 10 days. Your length of treatment depends on your individual progress.

Our Partial Hospitalization Program takes place:

• At one of these locations:
  • Marlborough Hospital
  • Harrington Hospital - Webster Campus
  • Harrington Hospital - Southbridge Campus
• Monday through Friday
• From 9 am to 3 pm

Our PHP Services

Our PHP services include:

• Psychiatric evaluation
• Medication management
• Intensive group therapy
• Individual psychotherapy and family therapy, as needed
• Referrals to mental health specialists who can help after you leave the program
• Help transitioning to daily life after you complete the program

Partial Hospitalization: What to Expect

You receive compassionate care from a dedicated psychiatric treatment team. We partner with you as you:

• Learn coping skills and create a safety plan
• Stabilize symptoms
• Improve life management skills
• Identify and make behavioral changes
• Learn how to positively express emotions and feelings
