Our Treatments and Services for Men’s Urologic Health

Urologists at UMass Memorial offer a complete range of treatments for genitourinary issues in men, including the latest minimally invasive procedures. We tailor care to your symptoms, lifestyle and personal preferences. 

Minimally Invasive Prostate Surgery

We treat benign (noncancerous) prostate problems, such as prostate enlargement and early-stage prostate cancer, with a range of minimally invasive procedures. These treatments can ease urinary problems with minimal side effects.  

We offer: 

• Aquablation: This treatment uses ultrasound imaging in combination with a high-pressure water jet to eliminate excess prostate tissue.
• Robotic prostatectomy: Surgeons operate through tiny incisions with the assistance of a robotic arm to remove the prostate. Learn more about robotic urologic surgery.
• Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP): We remove pieces of an enlarged prostate entirely through your urethra (tube that lets urine leave your body).
• Laser prostate treatment: A urologist uses a high-energy laser to evaporate excess prostate tissue that is blocking urine flow without any incisions.
• UroLift: Urologists place tiny implants to lift and secure an enlarged prostate so that it does not block the urethra. 

Treatment for Male Urinary Dysfunction

Prostate conditions, nerve problems and other issues can cause problems with how you urinate. Incontinence (involuntary urine leakage) or voiding dysfunction (difficulty emptying your bladder) are common concerns for many men. We can recommend medication or physical therapy techniques such as bladder retraining or pelvic floor exercises. Surgery may be right for some people depending on the cause of urinary dysfunction.

Erectile Dysfunction Treatment

We offer a range of treatments for erectile dysfunction (ED) and can talk with you or you and your partner to select the best option for your needs. Many men benefit from oral or injectable medications or testosterone replacement therapy to help them get and maintain an erection. 

Surgical options for ED include:

• Penile implant surgery: Urologic surgeons implant inflatable or semi-rigid devices, called prostheses, inside your penis and scrotum. You use the devices to manually increase the size or position of your penis before sex.
• Penile revascularization surgery: We repair or bypass blocked blood vessels to help blood flow to your penis. We typically reserve this procedure for younger men with injuries or trauma to the penis.
