Coordinated Evaluation and Diagnosis

General obstetrics and gynecology providers perform a thorough evaluation, including a detailed history and physical exam, advanced imaging and a pathology review. Radiologists specializing in abdominal and pelvic imaging interpret the results. Our pathologists specializing in gynecologic cancers review tissue samples to confirm a cancer diagnosis. Results from genetic and molecular testing help us personalize treatment and offer the most effective therapies available.

Genetic Counseling

UMass Memorial is one of the few programs in the region with genetic counselors specializing in gynecologic cancers. You may benefit from this service if you have a family or personal history of gynecologic cancer.

We offer genetic testing, which may detect gene changes (mutations) that contribute to the development of gynecologic and other cancers. Test results may help us tailor therapies to your needs and coordinate additional services as necessary. Genetic counselors work closely with our oncology team to ensure that test results inform personalized treatment.

Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS)

Our gynecologic oncologists have advanced training in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotic surgery. Using a laparoscopic or robotic approach allows surgeons to manage complex problems through small incisions. These surgical techniques help you recover quickly and comfortably.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation oncologists work closely with your gynecologic oncologist in meetings called tumor boards to create a customized cancer treatment plan. Our radiation therapy program maintains national recognition for exceptional safety and quality. You may benefit from radiation therapy as the primary treatment of your cancer, or if there is a higher risk that the cancer will return after surgery. It is also for people who are not eligible for surgery. Options for gynecologic cancers include external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy.

Medical Oncology

Medical therapies for gynecologic cancers include chemotherapy, immunotherapy and other drugs that halt cancer cell growth. Our gynecologic oncologists prescribe and manage these therapies, so you receive care from the same physician throughout treatment.

UMass Memorial offers a broad range of therapies, including newly approved options. You may also be eligible for innovative treatments only available through clinical trials.
