About Our CICU Services

The UMass Memorial cardiac ICU is specially designed to meet the needs of adult medical and surgical heart disease patients. We provide 24/7 monitoring of heart function as well as blood flow and pressure in your veins, arteries and heart chambers. This service helps you recover as quickly as possible so you can return home to your loved ones and daily activities.

You receive services from highly regarded critical care doctors (intensivists) and specially trained ICU nurses. We check in on you frequently and deliver bedside therapies that speed your recovery. The team also coordinates your care with your cardiologist and heart surgeon.

Who Is Our Cardiac Intensive Care Unit For?

You may need to stay in our CICU if you: 

  • Are recovering from a major heart procedure, like coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Need monitoring after a cardiac catheterization procedure or electrophysiology study
  • Have a heart issue and are hospitalized for other severe medical issues

Highly skilled heart specialists deliver the latest therapies and maintain excellent outcomes — even for rare and severe heart issues. After your stay, we continue caring for you with outpatient monitoring and helpful services like cardiac rehabilitation.

UMass Memorial uses innovative technology to provide attentive monitoring even when we’re not at your bedside. Our ICU telemedicine (eICU) system provides extra oversight from off-site critical care providers. The team alerts us to subtle changes that may indicate the need for additional therapies, enabling us to act quickly.
