Whether you experience occasional flare-ups or ongoing symptoms, we’re here to help.

The Diverticulitis Center at UMass Memorial Medical Center is the first center in the region dedicated exclusively to diverticulitis, making it a unique resource for people in Central Massachusetts. You receive personalized care from board-certified, fellowship-trained colorectal surgeons with extensive experience treating diverticular disease. Our goal is to identify and treat diverticulitis as early as possible, before serious complications develop.

Who We Treat

At our Diverticulitis Center, we provide specialized care for people who have been diagnosed with diverticulitis following a CT scan. Our team can answer your questions, discuss treatment options and help you determine the next steps.

If you’re experiencing new symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, constipation or diarrhea, please contact your primary care provider. They can evaluate you for diverticulitis and refer you to our Center if appropriate.

What to Expect

At the Diverticulitis Center, you have access to a team of surgeons, clinical coordinators, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and nutritionists. Our providers work together to determine which services and specialists are right for you. They also provide education about diverticulitis, scheduling assistance and ongoing support.

Depending on your condition and symptoms, we may recommend: 

• Ongoing observation 
• Colonoscopy 
• Nutritional consultation
• Gastroenterology consultation
• Medication to manage pain and other symptoms
• Diverticulitis surgery
