UMass Memorial Health is home to the region’s largest team of highly skilled chest (thoracic) imaging specialists. Some of our radiologists are nationally recognized. All providers use research-based methods that lead to precise imaging. Together, we perform nearly 45,000 studies annually, giving you access to uncommon expertise in the region. Our Chest Imaging Services

Thoracic radiologists assess issues affecting the lungs, mediastinum (area between the lungs), chest wall and the lining of the lungs (pleura). Our specialists are available seven days a week, ensuring timely interpretations of chest imaging for urgent conditions.

Our chest imaging services include:

  • X-rays: High-energy beams of radiation capture images of your lungs, blood vessels and bones of the chest and spine.
  • Fluoroscopy: Chest fluoroscopy uses X-rays to obtain real-time moving images of your lungs and nearby structures.
  • CT scans: A chest CT scan uses X-rays and a computer to produce 2D or 3D images that pinpoint the source of blockages, injuries, bleeding, infections and more.
  • MRI scans: A strong magnetic field captures images in thin slices, which a computer assembles into 3D pictures. We may recommend an MRI if we need more information than a CT scan can provide or if you need to avoid radiation exposure.
  • Nuclear medicine studies: You receive a safe level of radioactive substance that collects in areas of increased cell activity. A specialcamera pinpoints its location. Nuclear medicine scans assess air and blood flow within your lungs. 

Interventional Chest Procedures

Some of our thoracic radiologists have additional training in interventional procedures. They use real-time imaging to guide minimally invasive tests and procedures. Long tubes with instruments at the tip enable us to carry out the services you need.

Interventional chest procedures we perform include: 

  • Aspiration, draining excess fluid from the lungs
  • Lung biopsies, taking a tissue sample so we can evaluate it under a microscope
  • Suctioning, removing air from the space around the lungs

We frequently collaborate with colleagues in cancer care, pulmonology, cardiology, thoracic surgery and cardiac surgery. We also provide timely updates to primary care physicians and other referring providers, so you won’t need to worry about the details of your treatment plan.

Nationally Recognized Lung Cancer Screening Program

We provide annual screening tests to people facing a higher risk of lung cancer. For eligible individuals, testing involves a low-dose CT scan. Our commitment to safety and high standards has earned our program Lung Cancer Screening Center accreditation from the American College of Radiology.
