Mammography and Breast Imaging

UMass Memorial Health has been a trusted resource for breast cancer screening (mammography) and other imaging studies for decades. We have also advanced the field through research, paving the way for techniques currently used nationwide. We offer a full range of services, including routine screenings and diagnostic testing, in locations close to home. Through our partnership with Shields Health, we offer additional options for exceptional imaging at an affordable price. 

Nationally Recognized Breast Imaging Services

Our commitment to delivering the best available breast imaging and cancer services has earned our program distinction from the American College of Radiology:

• All UMass Memorial breast imaging locations have been recognized as ACR Designated Comprehensive Breast Imaging Centers (formerly known as Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence) – the highest achievement for a medical imaging facility.
• All UMass Memorial locations maintain accreditation for mammography and breast MRI. 

Who Needs Breast Imaging Studies? 

We recommend annual breast cancer screening with mammography for people beginning at age 40. To get started, view our breast health locations.

Breast Cancer Screening Services

Mammography is the standard breast imaging test. It is a special type of X-ray that evaluates breast tissue and its density and also detects calcium deposits present in early cancers. For patients with breast implants it also can detect ruptures or leaks. UMass Memorial offers 3D mammography (tomosyntheses), which shows multiple layers of breast tissue for a more comprehensive assessment. Insurance typically covers the cost of 3D mammograms.

Diagnostic Breast Imaging Services

If a screening mammogram shows clusters of calcifications, a change in tissue from prior year which you may or may not feel as a lump, or some irregularity we will ask you to return for additional imaging to learn more about it. There are many types of breast growths, including cysts and fibroadenomas. Not all of them are cancerous or require treatment.

Our advanced imaging services are available on short notice. This availability helps you find out quickly whether the lump is noncancerous or something that requires further investigation. 

 Diagnostic breast imaging services include:

• Breast ultrasound uses radio waves and technology to produce images of structures within your breast. We often use it to determine whether a lump is a fluid-filled cyst or solid mass.
• Automated whole-breast ultrasound, also known as ABUS, is an additional screening technique for women with dense breast tissue who are not experiencing cancer symptoms. It produces images of layers of breast tissue, giving our experts detailed views that are not available with traditional mammograms.
• Breast MRI detects areas of high blood flow, which can be a sign of a cancerous growth. We use MRI as an additional screening tool in people with a higher risk of breast cancer and individuals with breast implants.
