About the Pharmacy Department
At UMass Memorial Medical Center, the clinical partner of UMass Chan Medical School, pharmacy residents train in a large academic medical center where they care for diverse patient populations, collaborate with nationally recognized interdisciplinary teams and gain experience across a broad range of clinical, operational and specialty pharmacy settings. With more than 300 pharmacy professionals supporting care across five campuses, residents are immersed in one of the most comprehensive pharmacy practice environments in Central Massachusetts and beyond.
A Comprehensive Pharmacy Practice Environment
Under the leadership of the Chief Pharmacy Officer, the Department of Pharmacy offers a wide range of clinical, operational, administrative and specialty pharmacy experiences. Key practice areas include:
- Acute Care Pharmacy Operations, including inpatient, home care and outpatient clinic services
- Clinical Pharmacy Services
- Quality, Medication Safety, Regulatory Affairs and Pharmacy Informatics
- Oncology, Infusion Services, including Investigational Drug Services
- Advanced Therapeutics
- Retail, Specialty and Mail Order Pharmacy Services
- Pharmacy Business Services, including 340B Operations, Prior Authorization, Revenue Cycle, Supply Chain and Contracting
Pharmacy residents are active members of the patient care team, participating in interdisciplinary rounds, medication management initiatives, clinical consultations, quality improvement projects and research activities.
Advanced Inpatient Clinical Pharmacy Services
UMass Memorial Medical Center provides around-the-clock pharmacy coverage across its inpatient campuses, supporting patients with complex and acute care needs. Pharmacy residents develop advanced clinical skills as active members of specialized pharmacist-led programs and interdisciplinary care teams. These experiences build expertise in critical care, infectious diseases, medication stewardship, emergency response, transitions of care and transplant pharmacotherapy while strengthening clinical decision-making and collaborative patient care skills.
Ambulatory Care and Specialty Pharmacy Services
Beyond the inpatient setting, residents gain experience across a diverse network of ambulatory care and specialty pharmacy programs that support patients throughout the continuum of care. Key practice areas include:
- Medication Therapy Management (MTM)
- Bone Marrow Transplant
- Pediatric Oncology
- Heart Failure and Guideline-Directed Medical Therapy (GDMT)
- Advanced Therapeutics Clinics
These experiences provide residents with opportunities to develop expertise in chronic disease management, specialty medications, patient education, ambulatory care practice and longitudinal patient management.
Training, Teaching and Research Excellence
