Annual gun buyback to return in December, offers gift cards for guns

Police departments in Worcester and seven other Worcester municipalities are taking part in the annual gun buyback program Dec. 10 as part of a collaborative initiative to reduce the number of firearms in the community...

The program is a collaborative effort between the city, UMass Memorial Medical Center, the Worcester County District Attorney's Office, Worcester Police Department and the Worcester Department of Public Health.

Four Massachusetts hospitals named best for maternity care by U.S. News and World Report

Four Massachusetts hospitals have been named as "high performing" maternity care hospitals by the U.S. News and World Report. 

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Southcoast Hospitals-Fall River, New Bedford and Wareham, Massachusetts General Hospital and UMass Memorial Medical Center earned the designation for 2022-2023.

Homelessness in Worcester an issue heading into winter

It’s the busiest time of year for Melissa Recore and her colleagues at UMass Memorial Health's Homeless Outreach and Advocacy Project.

"Not having your basic needs met, not knowing where you can sleep that night, whether you'll be safe, that impacts your mental health," said Recore, who serves as the associate vice president of access for UMass Memorial Health's Community Healthlink. "So, we're also seeing that trickle in among our emergency services teams too, with individuals that are homeless, feeling hopeless and stuck."

Residents anonymously give up 191 weapons in countywide program offering amnesty and gift cards in return

Worcester area residents lined up Saturday to surrender a total of 191 weapons in exchange for gift cards at an annual gun buyback program that took place at locations across the county...

Every December for 21 years, the program has offered gun owners gift cards supplied by UMass Memorial Health and the Worcester District Attorney’s Office.

UMass Memorial Health awarded $1.2 million for COVID-19 response

UMass Memorial Health Care is the beneficiary of over $1.2 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Recently, FEMA announced UMass Memorial Health, which is headquartered in Worcester, had been awarded a $1,215,687 Public Assistance grant, for the steps the health care system took between November 2020 and March 2022 to keep patients, staff and the public safe.
