Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy
TMS therapy is an effective, medication-free treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD), treatment-resistant depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
TMS FAQs
At UMass Memorial, we want you to feel confident and informed about your treatment. We’re here to answer any questions you have about TMS and guide you through the process.
Most major insurance companies cover TMS therapy for major depressive disorder (MDD). New payors continue to add OCD to their list of covered conditions. Our team provides no-cost insurance verification and explains your coverage and any out-of-pocket expenses.
You may need to meet certain requirements before your insurance company covers or reimburses TMS therapy, including:
- Have a clinical diagnosis of MDD, treatment-resistant depression or OCD
- Have symptoms that haven’t improved with at least two (or up to four) medications
TMS has high success rates. Data shows that 83% of people experienced notable relief, and 62% achieved remission, which means their depression effectively went away.
Some people experience a mild headache after TMS treatment, which you can manage with acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
TMS is not the same as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). While both therapies stimulate your brain, ECT is a more intensive therapy that triggers a brief seizure and requires general anesthesia. ECT is for severe depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other forms of psychosis.
You can continue taking antidepressants during TMS. Some people can reduce or discontinue their medication after a successful course of treatment. Your psychiatrist will safely guide you through the process.
Why Choose UMass Memorial for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Treatment?
Integrated Therapies
Our wide range of treatments enables us to combine therapies, such as TMS and intranasal esketamine, when appropriate. You also have access to group and individual psychotherapy, outpatient programs and many other services to support your mental health.
Physician-Directed Care
Patients receive individual consultations with a board-certified psychiatrist. Our doctors carefully assess your symptoms and medical and psychiatric history. They work with you and your primary care provider to select the right treatment for your needs.
Innovative Research
Our researchers participate in studies to investigate new uses for TMS therapy, such as treating memory problems in older adults. Clinical trials allow us to bring emerging treatments to our patients before they’re widely available.
