What Is a Kidney Transplant?

During kidney transplant surgery, you receive a healthy kidney from a donor. The new kidney takes over the job of filtering your blood. A donor kidney may come from a deceased donor or a living donor.

While you’re waiting for your new kidney, we support your physical and mental health. You and your family have access to coordinated, team-based support from specialists in:

• Endocrinology and metabolism: We provide care and referrals for obesity, diabetes and metabolic conditions.
• Gastroenterology: Specialists care for all types of gastrointestinal conditions.
• Mental health: Our dedicated transplant psychiatrist provides mental health support.
• Cancer care: Receive comprehensive multispecialty care for all types of cancer.
• Support care: You may also work with transplant pharmacists, dietitians and social workers, depending on your needs.

Kidney Transplant Excellence

Our kidney transplant program combines advanced surgical expertise, academic medicine and compassionate multidisciplinary care, helping more patients access lifesaving transplantation close to home. Since performing our first kidney transplant in 1986, the program has grown into one of the region’s most experienced transplant centers, offering both living donor and deceased donor transplantation.
