Adult Kidney Transplant
Our experienced team delivers advanced kidney transplant care with outcomes that rank among the best in the region.
Why Choose Us for Kidney Transplant Care?
Expanded Pool of Organs
Our Central Massachusetts location gives us a larger organ catchment area than centers in Boston. We're also the only Massachusetts transplant center working with 34 Lives, an organization dedicated to decreasing the number of unused kidneys. This partnership increases the number of donor kidneys available to our patients, shortening wait times.
Outstanding Outcomes
Our kidney transplant recipients have some of the best survival rates and outcomes in the region, based on national transplant data. See our latest kidney transplant outcome data.
Convenient Location and Parking
We’re the only organ transplant center in Central Massachusetts, making us a convenient option for people outside the Boston area. Our transplant center is easy to access, and you’ll find plenty of free parking on site.
Frequently Asked Questions About Kidney Transplant
Many people with kidney failure qualify for transplant. Your UMass Memorial team evaluates your health, heart function and support system to see if transplant is right for you.
Wait times vary based on your blood type, health and donor availability. Some people with living donors receive a transplant within months. Our donor-matching and kidney-exchange programs may help you receive a kidney sooner.
If your donor is not a match, other living donor options may be available. Our paired kidney exchange program can match incompatible donor-recipient pairs with other compatible pairs.
Some people receive a kidney transplant before dialysis begins. Early evaluation may give you more options and help protect your long-term health. Our team helps you understand what may be possible for you.
Waiting can feel stressful, but you do not have to manage it alone. Your team monitors your health, coordinates specialty care and helps keep your testing current. Your coordinator stays connected with you and notifies you when a donor kidney becomes available. Learn more about the transplant patient journey.
After you leave the hospital, you continue care in our kidney transplant clinic. We monitor your blood work, exams, medications and recovery. Your team helps you follow nutrition guidelines and protect your new kidney.
