Emergency Care You Can Count on in Central Massachusetts and Beyond

From acute illness to traumatic injuries, UMass Memorial Health is here for you. Highly skilled doctors are available 24/7 to deliver the most advanced services for acute illnesses and traumatic injuries. Each year, we treat approximately 135,000 patients. This level of emergency care is not widely available in the region.

Emergency Department 

Our emergency department is home to experienced emergency medicine doctors, highly trained nurses and responsive support staff. We respond swiftly to all patients who come through our doors and deliver personalized care reflecting the latest research. 

Life Flight Air Ambulance 

UMass Memorial is also home to the region’s only air ambulance, Life Flight . This helicopter service quickly transports our most medically fragile patients. We deliver pre-hospital care and communicate with emergency department staff to help expedite your care. 

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) 

Emergency medical services manages Worcester’s EMS Communications Center, ensuring you receive the care you need as quickly as possible. They quickly dispatch paramedics and emergency medical technicians with in-depth training in critical care techniques.

Level I Trauma Center 

UMass Memorial Medical Center maintains accreditation from the American College of Surgeons as the only Level I trauma center for adults and children in Central Massachusetts. We provide the highest level of care for the region’s most severe traumatic injuries.

Disaster Preparedness

UMass Memorial supports our National Medical Disaster System by training volunteer emergency medicine doctors, nurses, emergency medical technicians, paramedics and other clinicians. We also coordinate with logistics and communications experts.

Our team provides focused care for specific types of medical emergencies. These services are also available 24/7.

Specialized emergency care offerings include:   

  • Cardiac catheterization lab at the Medical Center performs procedures to assess and restore blood flow to the heart.
  • Emergency mental health services connect people in psychiatric crisis with caring professionals who bring healing.
  • Pediatric emergency care provides age-appropriate treatment at UMass Memorial Medical Center – Children’s Medical Center.
  • Stroke Center rapidly assesses and treats blockages and ruptured blood vessels in the brain.
  • Toxicology care is for people dealing with the effects of poison and toxic chemical exposure.

Our mobile integrated health service provides on-demand care at home 24/7. Highly skilled paramedics use portable diagnostics and remote monitoring to treat pressing medical concerns. Leadership in Emergency Medicine Education

We are training the next generation of emergency care providers in partnership with UMass Chan Medical School. Our experts provide advanced training through fellowships in emergency medical services, disaster medicine, emergency ultrasound, toxicology and more. Only programs like ours that successfully treat a high volume of patients maintain this honor.

Emergency Care Research

Emergency medicine doctors are advancing care and outcomes through research. Areas of interest include emergency ultrasound, critical care, sepsis, substance abuse, suicide prevention and more.
