Research and Teaching

At UMass Memorial Medical Center, we want to contribute more to the communities we serve in Central New England than excellent orthopedic care alone. We’re also involved in cutting-edge research and clinical trials to help improve the fields of orthopedics, pediatric orthopedics and rheumatology for the future. And thanks to our affiliation with the UMass Chan Medical School, we are also training tomorrow’s specialists.

Research and Clinical Trials at UMass Memorial Medical Center

If you’re a patient receiving advanced orthopedic care at our Musculoskeletal Center of Excellence at the Medical Center in Worcester, you have access to our ongoing clinical trials. Patients receiving orthopedic care at our other UMass Memorial hospitals may be eligible as well. Talk to your doctor to find out.

Here’s an overview of some of our research studies and clinical trials:

  • The Agency on Healthcare Research and Quality selected UMass Memorial to lead five other nationally respected orthopedic programs in recruiting patients and collecting information for a first-of-its-kind database of joint replacement patients to clearly understand outcomes and how joint replacement surgery affects a patient’s quality of life
  • Our researchers have been involved in over $19 million in funded research, including many projects with the National Institutes of Health, making our orthopedic program one of the top funded programs in the country
  • We received $1.7 million from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Skin Diseases to improve patient outcomes after total knee replacement surgery and an addition $1.8 million to support a synthetic musculoskeletal tissue graft laboratory
