Everyone, Everyday. Relentlessly: Meet Bency Louidor, MD

As we update our brand name to UMass Memorial Health and launch a new brand campaign, it’s time to tell the world who we are, what we do and what we stand for as a health care system. Our relentless caregivers are the inspiration for the update of our new brand name and campaign. Find out more about these caregivers and how it takes everyone, everyday working together relentlessly to care for our patients and each other. This week, we interviewed Bency Louidor, MD, of Harvard Primary Care, who talked with us about everything from her journey in medicine to her favorite way to pass the time.

As a young girl, Dr. Louidor was first drawn to medicine while visiting her grandparents one summer in Haiti. She remembers seeing her once lively grandfather confined to a wheelchair after suffering from several strokes and thinking, “This is wrong, I don’t want to see this happen to other people that I love.“ It was this moment that propelled her forward in her studies and eventually led her to being the esteemed family medicine physician at UMass Memorial Health she is today.

In her practice, Dr. Louidor pursues her early dream of bringing better health to people by informing patients of good health practices so that they can make the best choices for themselves. “I like to allow my patients to be in the driver’s seat of their health care and be there to educate them,” she said. Each time a patient comes into her office, Dr. Louido rtakes the opportunity to teach preventative health practices. By giving patients more autonomy in their health care, she empowers them to make the right decisions for themselves.

Dr. Louidor, has learned just as much from patients as they have learned from her. Working as a family medicine physician allows her to treat multiple generations of people from all walks of life, and that experience has been eye-opening for her. “It really helps when you are taking care of the grandparents, the parents and the children. That way, you can build a great therapeutic relationship with the entire family. I don’t think a lot of people, even within medicine, have that privilege,” she said.

Dr. Louidor welcomes everyone who comes into her office. As colleague Thomas Scornavacca, DO, observed, “Bency is well respected by our entire staff, as well as our patients. She exhibits the great combination of experience and expertise with a friendly, calm demeanor.”

“I hope that UMass Memorial Health continues to build a strong and diverse community,” Dr. Louidor noted. “That’s going to make the organization stronger, to continue to be innovative and to support the community.”

When she’s not helping patients, Dr. Louidor likes to spend her time listening to audiobooks and podcasts. She is interested in all different subjects and will listen in the car or at home. “It makes my drive easier, and is great if I am doing house chores,” Dr. Louidor noted. “It’s something I really enjoy actually.”
