Liver Cancer

Working closely with the gastrointestinal specialists of our Cancer Center of Excellence we offer patients a comprehensive spectrum of care, from diagnosis through treatment, surgery and recovery.  Using advanced liver function tests, imaging (ultrasound, CT scan and x-ray) and biopsy, we accurately diagnose and stage your liver disease and develop an effective individual treatment plan in collaboration with our team of specialists.

Liver Transplant

UMass Memorial offers the most comprehensive organ transplant programs in the region—and one of the busiest liver transplant programs in the state.  In addition to providing liver transplant (including living-donor transplant) we also provide pancreas transplant and kidney transplant.  Learn more about organ transplantation at UMass Memorial Medical Center and see our Transplant Report.

Liver Tumor Center

The Liver Tumor Center at UMass Memorial Medical Center provides the most advanced surgical and non-surgical treatment options for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), or primary liver cancer. A collaboration between the Department of Surgery and the Cancer Center of Excellence, the Liver Tumor Center offers therapies to patients who formerly had few options for treatment or cure, in part because liver cancer is not often diagnosed until it has progressed.

Our team of specialists—including surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and interventional radiologists, infectious disease specialists, pathologists, and palliative care experts—focuses on providing comprehensive therapies and symptom management, with the ultimate goal of liver transplantation or liver resection (removal of part of the liver). For many patients, surgery and liver transplantation offers the best chance for a cure.

Research and Clinical Trials

Working with the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, the Cancer Center serves as a forum for education and research. Extensive cancer research and clinical trials are conducted so you benefit from the latest diagnostic and treatment options that come from this research.
